RISPERDAL® CONSTA® (risperidone) Administration Options
You can give patients more choice
RISPERDAL® CONSTA® is approved for deltoid administration. You can offer appropriate patients a choice of 2 administration sites to receive their long-acting therapy. When you offer deltoid administration as an option, your patients may experience:
- Greater flexibility to rotate administration sites
- Less embarrassment over disrobing
- Less fear
- Needle measures only 1 inch
- Less stigma than traditional gluteal injections
- Patients may associate deltoid administration with traditional injections that they are accustomed to receiving (eg, flu shots, measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus)
In an 8-week study in people who received RISPERDAL® CONSTA® administered in the deltoid muscle, there were no treatment discontinuations due to local injection-site pain or adverse reactions.1
Gluteal administration may still be the right choice for patients who
- Prefer gluteal administration
- Are unable to tolerate deltoid injection due to insufficient muscle mass in the deltoid area
The mean intensity of injection pain reported by patients with schizophrenia using a visual analog scale (0 = no pain to 100 = unbearably painful) decreased in all treatment groups from the first to the last injection (placebo: 16.7 to 12.6; 25 mg: 12.0 to 9.0; 50 mg: 18.2 to 11.8). After the sixth injection (Week 10), investigator ratings indicated that 1% of patients treated with 25 mg or 50 mg RISPERDAL® CONSTA® experienced redness, swelling, or induration at the injection site.
The addition of a deltoid administration site also means patients may appreciate having
- Greater flexibility in alternating the administration site for long-acting therapy
- More options in choosing the administration site for long-acting therapy
- The opportunity to observe the deltoid injection

New carton contains both deltoid and gluteal needles. Contents clearly labeled on top of carton.
