Who Is Affected by Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia affects more than 2 million American adults each year. It is not known why this illness affects some and not others. It can occur in men and women regardless of race, economic status, or geographical location.
Men and women are at equal risk of developing this illness. However, most men start to see symptoms between the late teen years and early 20s. For women, symptoms typically occur later in life, often in their 20s and early 30s.
